shrub

A shrub up to 1 m tall, glabrous throughout, the lenticels conspicuous, densely prickled, the prickles usually in pairs, up to 1–1.3 cm long.
Leaves 7–13-foliolate; leaflets ovate or oblong, 6–12 mm long, 5–8 mm wide, truncate and dentate at apex, acute or cuneate at base, glabrous on both sides, serrulate but entire toward the base; stipules subulate-ovate, their 1/2 length adnate to the petioles, the margin glandular-serrulate.
Flowers terminal, solitary, white; calyx 4-lobed, the lobes entire, lanceolate, 1.5–2 cm long, long-acuminate at apex, pubescent on both surfaces, the margin sparsely glandular; styles distinct, persistent, densely villose.
Fruits obovate, 6–8 mm across.

台灣 : The variety endemic to Taiwan, in central mountains at high altitudes. It differs from var. sericea by the prickles which are not strongly compressed, and the stems and bracts are not hirsute.
世界 : The species in southern China, the Himalayas, India and Burma.
