Stems clustered, climbing, to ca. 20-50 m long, 2-2.5 cm in diam.; internodes 40-60 cm long; sheaths 3.5-4 cm across, dull brown, covered with whorls of blackish flattened spines, spines to 2.5 cm long, rather fragile, horizontally spreading or slightly reflexed.
Leaves without cirrus, 1.2-1.8 m long, 50 cm across, pinnately compound; leaflets regular, narrowly linear, about 31-38 in pairs, 33-43 cm long, 1.3-2 cm wide; midrib with 2 veinlets on each side, with few spines apically, glabrous beneath, midrib prominent; petiole 22 cm long, with scattered short recurved spines.
Inflorescences 1.8 m or more long; flagellum slender to 2 m long, with tubular bracts.
Fruit subglobose, yellowish, tip dark brown, ca. 1.5 cm in diam., short beaked, scale in 21 vertical rows; seeds ellipsoid, ca. 1 cm across; endosperm homogeneous.
