形態特徵

Culms to 20 m tall, and 20 cm in diam., internodes 20-70 cm long; nodes rather prominent, lower nodes often bearing aerial roots; walls 0.5-3 cm thick; branches numerous at each node, upper branches drooping.
Sheath of culm deciduous, coriaceous, hard and brittle, rounded at apex, truncate at base, orange-yellow at first, then changing to pale brown in age, dull brown pubescent outside, entire; auricles of sheath small, somewhat reflexed; ligule of sheath narrow, 1-3 mm high, toothed; blade of sheath ovate to lanceolate, reflexed. Leaves 5-12, oblong-lanceolate, acute, 20-40 cm long, 2.5-7.5 cm broad, veins 7-15, veinlets 7, subtessellate, spinulose-scabrous along one margin, sparsely so or entire along other; petiole short, 4-8 mm long; ligule of leaf very conspicuous, convex, rounded or truncate; sheath of leaf 10-22 cm long, minutely pubescent toward base when young, glabrous when old.
Spikelets in clusters of 1-7 at nodes of leafless branches, ovate, reddish purple to dark purple when mature, 1-2 cm long, 0.8-1.2 cm wide, 6-8-flowered; glumes 2 or more; lemma broadly ovate, 12-13 mm long, 7-16 mm wide, densely hairy, veins 29-33; paleas 7-11 mm long, 3-4 mm wide, hairy, veins 3 between keels and 2 between each keel and edge; gynoecium 16 mm long; ovary globose or ovoid, hairy, with 3 vascular strands seen in cross section; style long, ending with a feathery stigma; stamens 6, usually open, anthers 5-7 mm long with at tail shaped tip; lodicule absent.
Fruit ovoid, 0.8-1.2 cm long, 0.4-0.6 cm in diam., pericarp thin, light brown.

台灣 : Widely and commonly cultivated throughout the island, especially in the central part.
世界 : Myanmar to southern China.
