An evergreen shrub, 1–2 m tall, glabrous.
Leaves oblong, oblong-lanceolate or elliptic, (9.5-)12.5–17.6(–20.4) cm long, (3.0-)3.6–5.1(–6.9) cm broad, apex acute to acuminate, base cuneate, green above, pale green beneath, sometimes turning red when dry; the lateral veins 8–10(–11)-paired, midrib and lateral veins concave on upper side; petioles (0.5-)0.7–2.2(–2.6) cm long; stipules triangular to broadly triangular, 4–6 mm long.
Inflorescence in terminal cymes, rarely axillary; peduncles with glandular hairs or subpubescent. Flowers white, 3–5 mm long, 4–5 mm in diam., unisexual, dioecious; male flowers: corolla greenish-white, cup-like, (4-)5(–6)-lobed, densely white pilose in mouth; stamens exserted, as many as corolla lobes, filaments 2 mm long, dense pilose, the rudimentary pistil (pistillode) short, included, calyx pale green, 5-toothed; female flowers: corolla and calyx similar to male flowers, style cylindrical, 4 mm long, stigma 2-lobed, papillous, staminode in mouth of corolla.
Fruits globose, ridge, 4–7 mm long, 4–8 mm in diam., red or orangish-red at maturity.

台灣 : very common species presented in broad-leaved forests throughout this island.
世界 : Southern China, Hainan Island, the Ryukyus to Japan.
