型態特徵
Trees, shrubs, lianas, or herbs. Leaves simple, mostly entire, commonly decussately opposite, often with connate interpetiolar stipules, or sometimes whorled, or rarely stipules intrapetiolar. Inflorescence basically cymose, terminal or lateral, rarely solitary flowers. Flowers mostly complete, rarely unisexual, nearly always epigynous, often heterostyle, zoophilous or rarely anemophilous, actinomorphic or rarely zygomorphic, often tetramerous or pentamerous. Calyx adnate to the ovary, aestivation open, lobes minute or obsolete, sometimes one or more enlarged and colored. Corolla sympetalous, salverform, rotate or funnelform. Stamens as many as and alternate corolla lobes, attached within corolla tube or at mouth; anthers dithecal, opening longitudinally. Ovary nearly always inferior, often bicarpellate; style single, terminal; stigma capitate or lobed. Fruit a capsule, berry, drupe, or schizocarp.

型態特徵
Shrubs, small trees or climbers. Leaves opposite. Flowers greenish-white, in terminal cymes or head-like, rarely axillary, bisexual or unisexual; corolla-tube short, cup-like, (4-)5(–6)-lobed, valvate in bud, the mouth of throat pilose; stamens as many as the lobes, 2-celled, longitudinally dehiscent, exserted or included, filaments glabrous or pilose; styles cylindrical, stigma 2-lobed, papillose; ovary 2-celled, ovule 1 in each cell; bisexual flowers dimorphic, heterostyles; unisexual flowers dioecious; male flowers: with rudimentary pistil, included, stamens long-exserted; female flowers: with rudimentary empty stamens in mouth of corolla, styles exserted. Fruit a drupe, red, black or white at maturity. Seeds 2 ridged.
