A dioecious, glabrous shrub or small tree, 1–6 m high; twigs sharply angular, foliage usually deciduous.
Leaves olivaceous above and paler beneath when dry, oblong-elliptic, elliptic to obovate, 2–7.5 cm long, 1–4.5 cm broad, lateral veins mostly 5–8 each side, prominently raised (especially beneath), veinlets forming a close reticulum, round or obtuse to acute or minutely apiculate at apex, acute to cuneate at base, entire and slightly revolute on margins; petiole 3–6 mm long; stipule triangular to lanceolate, 1.5–3 mm long, acute or acuminate, often deciduous.
Flowers in fascicle, staminate flowers mostly 15–40 per fascicle, pistillate flowers 3–10. Staminate flowers: sepals mostly 5, ovate to elliptic or suborbicular, 0.8–1.5 mm long, entire to distally dentate, stamens 5, free, filaments slender, 1–2 mm long; pistillode usually abruptly reflexed; disc segments 5; pedicel 3–6 mm long. Pistillate flowers: sepals 5, unequal, elliptic or ovate, outer ones larger, 0.7–1 mm long; styles 3, basally connate into a column, the tips bifid, spreading or reflexed, sometimes dilated; ovary of 3 carpels; disc annular; pedicel 1.5–5 mm long in fruit.
Fruit dimorphic, subglobose to oblate, either whitish baccate, 4–6 mm across, or crustaceous, 2–3 mm across, usually both dehiscent when matured. Seeds chestnut brown, 1.5–2 mm long, nearly smooth to reticulate, with a ventral invagination.

分布

台灣 : Throughout the island, common in dry thickets and secondary forests at low and medium altitudes.
世界 : Old World tropics, from western Africa to Asia, Indonesia.
