Small Evergreen trees; trunk to 15 m high, 25 cm across, rather straight, glabrous, light violet-black; bark with deciduous scales, scars of bark with reddish-brown, yellowish-brown, yellowish-white or brown-violet dots; buds ovoid, bracts imbricate, (sca
Leaves alternate, coriaceous, entire, obovate-oblong to obovate-lanceolate, 4.5-10 cm long, 1.4-4 cm broad, acute at apex, obtuse at summit, cuneate at base, violet-green when young, deep green above when fresh, glabrous, glaucous, somewhat hirsute beneath, midrib prominent beneath, lateral veins 7-9 pairs, somewhat indistinct above, somewhat elevated beneath; veinlets indistinct on both surfaces; petioles 0.6-1.6 cm long, hairy when young, later glabrous.
Inflorescences short umbels, appearing in summer, axillary, nearly sessile; bracts 4, alternately opposite, yellow, the outer bracts 2.5 mm long, the inner bracts 4-4.5 mm long, hairy outside; staminate tepals 6, long ovate or elliptic, 2.5-3 mm long, 1 mm broad, obtuse at apex, hairy above, ciliate; fertile stamens 9, introrse, filaments 5-6 mm, villous, anthers 4-celled, 3rd whorl with 2 glands at base of filaments; reduced pistil ca. 1 mm long hairy, stigma pointed; pistillate tepals 6 reduced stamens 9, filaments 1.5 mm long, filiform, 3rd whorl with 2 glands at base of filament; pistil 2.5 mm long, stigma enlarged, style 1.5 mm long, villous; ovary elliptic-globose, glabrous, 1-celled, 1-ovuled.
Berry globose to elliptic-globose, 8-10 mm across, glabrous, apiculate at tip, red to blackish-violet, stalk stout.

台灣 : in lowlands throughout the Island, such as from Yangmingshan to Suangsi, Taipei, Shinkan, Chinkong and Taitung.
世界 : Japan, the Ryukyus, southern Korea.
