Medium-sized deciduous trees; branchlets glabrous, brown-black when dry; buds tomentose outside, margins glabrous.
Leaves alternate, thick chartaceous, oblong to oblong-lanceolate, 15-23 cm long, 4-10 cm broad, acute to acuminate at apex, acute at base, glabrous, deep brown-black above when dry, glaucous, glabrous to glabrescent and light grayish beneath, midrib impressed, concave above, elevated beneath, lateral veins 9-12 pairs, elevated on both surfaces, veinlets reticulate, slightly distinct above, very distinct beneath; petioles 1.8-3 cm long, glabrous, blackish when dry.
Inflorescences umbellate, axillary, appear September to March, 15-20-flowered; peduncles 1.5 cm long; involucral bracts 4, coriaceous, concave, pubescent, later glabrous outside; staminate flowers violet-red; pedicels pubescent, 1 cm long; tepals 6, long-obovate or spatulate, 4.5 mm long, 2.5 mm broad, slightly pubescent outside, rounded at apex; fertile stamens 9, ca. 6 mm long, filaments hirsute, anthers 2-celled, introrse, 1st and 2nd whorles of stamens eglandular, 3rd whorl with 2 green stipitate glands at base of filaments; reduced ovary minute.
Berry ellipsoid, violet-black, glabrous, 1.2 cm long, 1 cm across; pedicels 1-1.5 cm long, glabrescent.
