Medium-sized evergreen tree to 12 m high, trunks 0.5 cm across; bark grayish-dark brown, furrowed; branches grayish-dark brown; branchlets grayish.
Leaves somewhat clustered on branchlets, broadly obovate, obovate, long-obovate, elliptic to broadly lanceolate, 6–14 cm long, 1.9–8 cm broad, coriaceous, glabrous in age, glaucous or not beneath, short-acute or acuminate at apex, auriculate at base, serrate, with incurved teeth, lateral veins 11–15 pairs; petioles 0.2–0.6 cm long.
Staminate catkins 3–4 cm long; staminate flowers 1.5–2 mm long, 2.5 mm broad; perianth 5–6-lobed, very hairy outside, glabrous inside; stamens 3–6, filaments glabrous, anthers 7 mm long, 5 mm broad. Pistillate flowers 2 mm long, 1.5 mm broad (3 mm long, 3 mm broad with the involucre); styles 3, hairy, stigmas corpulent at top; ovary imcompletely 3-celled, 1.1–1.3 cm across, apiculate at apex, obtuse at base.
Cupules with imbricate scales;nuts ovoid, 1.8–2.3 cm long, 1–1.2 cm across, hairy.
Usually growing with Pinus taiwanensis, Pinus morrisonicola, Pistacia chinensis, Rhus succedanea, Rhus sylvestris, Liquidambar formosana, Cyclobalanopsis glauca, Quercus variabilis and Rhododendron breviperulatum etc.

台灣 : in forests at altitudes of 650–1,600 m in the central part of the island (Mts. Salien and Tongmao near Paileng, Lileng, Poai, Chiuliangsei and Kukuan in Taichung County).
世界 : Widely distributed in mainland China (from south to north), Korea and Japan.
