Evergreen trees, 17–18 m high, trunks 1.2 m across; bark grayish-brown; branches yellowish-gray, branchlets deep brown to gray-brown, with gray spots.
Leaves oblong-lanceolate, 6–9.5 cm long, 1.5–2 cm wide, acuminate or acute at apex, cuneate or acute at base, entire, coriaceous, gray-appressed-tomentose, midrib elevated beneath, lateral veins 11–14 pairs, indistinct, flat on both sides or slightly elevated beneath; petioles 0.4–0.7 cm long.
Staminate catkins pendulous, about 5 cm long; Staminate flowers 2.5 mm long, 3 mm wide; perianth 5–6-lobed, puberulent outside, glabrous inside; stamens 5–6, filaments glabrous, 1.6 mm long, anthers 0.9 mm long, puberulent. Pistillate flowers 2 mm long, 1.5 mm wide; ovary 3-celled, with 2 ovules in each cell, styles 3, hairy, stigmas enlarged at tip.
Cupules disk-like, 0.5–0.8 cm long, 1.5–1.8 cm across, tomentose outside, scales in 8–11 concentric rings;nuts globose to ellipsoid, 1.7–2.1 cm long, 1.4–1.8 cm across, gray-tomentose, convex at tip, round at base.

Staminate flowers blooming from December to January.

台灣 : Found only on the slopes of low altitudes in the southeastern part of Taiwan. Specimens were collected at Tawu (Ansu at 30–700 m and Chinshuiying at 200–800 m) and Chihpen (compartment 26 at about 600 m), Taitung.
