形態特徵

Medium-sized evergreen trees up to 20 m high, trunks 0.6 m across; bark greenish-brown; branches slightly glabrous; branchlets whitish, silky-hairy.
Leaves alternate, obovate-oblong to broadly elliptic, 9–12 cm long, 2.6–4.5 cm broad, coriaceous, caudate-acuminate at apex, acute at base, serrate toward apex at margins, green and polished above, glaucous beneath, with whitish silky hairs only when young, lateral veins 8–11 pairs; petioles 1.5–2.3 cm long.
Staminate catkins pendulous, hairy, 6–10 cm long; Staminate flowers appearing with young Leaves , 3 mm long, 2.2 mm wide; perianth 5–6-lobed, membranaceous, lobes lanceolate, hairy at tip outside; stamens 4–7 (–8), filaments 1.4 mm long, anthers 0.8 mm long, glabrous. Pistillate flowers 2–3; ovary 3-celled, styles 3, stigmas enlarged, flattened.
Cupules cup-like, 1.3–1.5 cm long, 1–1.2 cm across, silky-hairy outside, scales in 7–10 concentric rings;nut 1, axillary, oblong-globose, 1.8–2 cm long, about 1.2–1.5 cm across, acutish at apex.

物候

Staminate flowers blooming from January to April; fruits maturing from October to Feburary.

分布

台灣 : very common in forests from sea level to 800 m altitude throughout the island.
世界 : Widely distributed in Afghanistan, India, Himalayas, China (E, SE, S, SW, C & Xizang), Vietnam, Korea, Japan and the Ryukyus.
