Evergreen trees up to 30 m high, trunk 3 m across; bark dark gray-brown, scaly; branches with yellowish-brown stellate hairs.
Leaves oblanceolate to broadly oblanceolate, 8.5–18 cm long, 2.1–4 cm broad, abruptly acute at apex, cuneate at base, deep green above, densely yellowish-stellate-hairy beneath, margins serrate toward apex, lateral veins 14–18 pairs; petioles densely stellate hairy, 1.3–2 cm long.
Staminate catkins pendulous, 7–11 cm long; Staminate flowers from March to April, 2.5–2.6 mm long, 3 mm wide; perianth 5–6-lobed, puberulent outside, glabrous inside; stamens 7–8 (–10), filaments 1.8 mm long, anthers 0.8 mm long, puberulent. Pistillate flowers enclosed in an involucre; styles 3, connate.
Cupules cup-like, scales in 6–8 concentric rings, brownish-tomentose outside;nuts ellipsoid, 1.5–2 cm long, 1.2–1.5 cm across, brown.
