型態特徵
Trees, shrubs, rarely herbs, with abundant pellucid glands, filled with essential oils. Leaves opposite or alternate, simple or compound, estipulate. Inflorescence various. Flowers usually regular, hermaphroditic or polygamous; sepals 4–5, free or connate; petals 4–5, rarely none, imbricate or valvate; stamens as many or twice as many as the petals, sometimes fewer or more numerous; disc usually annular or cushion-like, between the ovary and stamens; ovary superior, usually deeply lobed, typically 4–5-loculed, the carpels more or less connate, or free, rarely 1-carpellary; ovules solitary or geminate. Fruit various, separating into as many cocci as carpels or baccate. Seeds usually solitary in each cell, the testa various; endosperm fleshy or 0; embryo straight or curved.

Shrubs (rarely scandent) or trees, unarmed. Leaves opposite, digitately 3-foliolate or l-foliolate. Inflorescences thyrsiform or sometimes reduced to single flowers, axillary. Flowers small, bisexual; sepals 4; petals 4, white to cream or yellowish, distinct, valvate, becoming recurved; stamens 8, distinct, retrorsely pilose adaxially, becoming recurved; disc intrastaminal, pulvinate; gynoecium 4- or rarely 4- to 8-carpellate, the carpels connate basally or up to their full length, with a common apical style, the stigma punctiform or capitellate, the ovules 2 per carpel. Fruit of 1–4 basally connate drupes (the abortive carpels, if any, persistent) or grading to syncarpous (the carpels united into a 4-locular drupe). Seeds solitary or in pairs, narrowly ellipsoid to subpyriform; testa smoothish or irregularly sculptured, with rather thin to thick inner layer of dense, black sclerenchyma.
