Trees, shrubs, rarely herbs, with abundant pellucid glands, filled with essential oils. Leaves opposite or alternate, simple or compound, estipulate. Inflorescence various. Flowers usually regular, hermaphroditic or polygamous; sepals 4–5, free or connate; petals 4–5, rarely none, imbricate or valvate; stamens as many or twice as many as the petals, sometimes fewer or more numerous; disc usually annular or cushion-like, between the ovary and stamens; ovary superior, usually deeply lobed, typically 4–5-loculed, the carpels more or less connate, or free, rarely 1-carpellary; ovules solitary or geminate. Fruit various, separating into as many cocci as carpels or baccate. Seeds usually solitary in each cell, the testa various; endosperm fleshy or 0; embryo straight or curved.
