型態特徵

Perennial herbs of marshes. Rhizome aromatic, creeping. Leaves distichous, ensiform, ascending, coriaceous, with parallel nerves. Spadix sessile, cylindrical; stamens 6; anthers dehiscent by slits; ovary conical, 2 or 3 celled; ovules many, pendulous from apex of each cell, orthotropous; stigma minute. Fruit a few seeded berry; seeds oblong with fleshy endosperm.

Acorus is now generally recognized as belonging to a separate family, the Acoraceae.
