Culms erect, 2-6 m tall, 1-3 cm in diam., quadrangular, rough, with 4 rounded corners; nodes prominent, with a ring of short spines; internodes 5-20 cm long; walls 3-8 mm thick; branches usually 3 at each node first year, multiple with numerous twigs thereafter.
Sheath of culm deciduous, narrowly triangular, subcoriaceous, light brown, mottled with purplish brown spots, fimbriate along margins, without an auricle, ligule or blade. Leaves 3-5, narrowly lanceolate, 10-20 cm long, 1-2 cm broad, acute, cuneate at base, thin, veins 4-7, veinlets 5-6, tessellate, spinulose-scabrous along one margin, sparsely so along other; petiole short, ca. 2 mm long; auricles of leaf small, with tufts of long brown bristles; ligule of leaf rounded, entire; sheath of leaf 4-7 cm long, glabrous outside, densely ciliate along one side.
Flowers unknown.

台灣 : Introduced since early times at Fenchihu, Alishan, at 1,450 m; in recent years extensively planted in Taipei, Nantou, Taichung, Chiayi and Kaohsiung for ornamental purposes.
世界 : Native of southern China.
