Shrub; branches persistently 4-angled to narrowly 4-winged.
Leaves sessile; lamina 1.9-7 cm long, 0.5-1.6 cm broad, narrowly elliptic to lanceolate or narrowly oblong-elliptic, apex acute to subacute or rounded-apiculate, base cuneate, chartaceous, rather paler beneath, with distinct submarginal vein, almost invisible reticulate venation and only pale glandular dots, ± prominent above.
Inflorescence 1-3-flowered, terminal, sometimes with up to 6 pairs of axillary flowers or short 1-flowered branches; flowers ca. 2.5 cm in diam., ± plane, in bud ovoid, acute; sepals 5-8 mm long, 1-2(-3) mm broad, oblanceolate or elliptic to oblong-linear, subacute to acute or shortly acuminate, with entire margin, erect in fruit; petals 10-12 mm long, 6-7 mm broad, obovate, yellow, deciduous; stamen fascicles 5, deciduous, each with ca. 15 stamens; anthers yellow, with amber gland; ovary 2-4 mm long, ± narrowly ovoid, 5-locular, the 5 styles 2-2.5 times as long, completely united.
Capsule 7-9 mm long, 3-4 mm broad, narrowly ovoid to cylindric;Seeds 0.9-1.1 mm long, dark yellowish brown, scarcely carinate, with terminal appendage.
The 4-angled mature stems distinguish <i>H. subalatum</i> from all other Taiwan shrubby species.
