Evergreen tree, to 30 m high, 1.5 m across; bark gray-brown; branches very stout, branchlets green, polished.
Levaes alternate, thick papery, ovate-oblong to broad-ovate, 20–60 cm long, 14–45 cm wide, short acute at apex, rounded to obtuse at base, dark green above, midrib and lateral veins with sparse white hairs, usually prominent, lateral veins about 10 pairs, entire to pinnately lobed, lobes 3–8, acute; peioles 7.8–12 cm long, light green, glabrous; stipules 2, bracted, ovate, light yellowish.
Flowers April to May, unisexual, inflorescence axillary; male Flowers, 2–5 mm long, perianth 2-lobed, deep yellow; stamen 1, filaments white; female Flowers appearing after male Flowers, broadly ovoid, 4–5.8 cm long, 3.3–4.8 cm across, yellow to yellowish-brown; perianth lobed; pistil 1, ovule 1, stigma 2-lobed, style filiform.
Multiple fruit maturing from July to August, globose to ellipsoid, 10–20 cm in diameter, yellowish-green to deep yellow, usually with 30–86 achenes;seeds enclosed by fleshy arils, compressed-ellipsoid or ovoid, 1.4–1.7 cm long, 0.7–1 cm wide, seed-coat milky white, very thin.

分布

台灣 : Lanyu Island (Botel Tobago or Orchid Island); also cultivated throughout the island of Taiwan.
世界 : Commonly cultivated in tropical and subtropical Asia.
