Evergreen trees up to 20 m high, trunks 0.6 m across; bark tea-brown
Leaves alternate, clustered at apex of branchlets, oblong-obovate to oblong, 8.5–12 cm long, 2.5–3 cm wide, acute at apex, obtuse at base, margins almost entire, slightly revolute except those near apex, coriaceous, glabrous, midrib concave above, elevated beneath, lateral veins 8–10 pairs; petioles short, 0.5–0.6 cm long.
Flowers in catkins or spikes; staminate flowers 3 mm long, 3 mm wide; perianth 4–6-parted, hairy above and outside; stamens 5–6 (4–9), filaments 2 mm long, glabrous, anthers 1 mm long. Pistillate flowers enclosed in an involucre; ovary 3-celled, styles 3.
Cupules cup-like, 1–1.2 cm long, 1.6–1.8 cm across, scales in 9–10 concentric rings, tomentose outside;nuts ellipsoid, 1.7–1.9 cm long, 1.3–1.8 cm across, with deep brown lines, glabrous.

物候

Staminate flowers blooming from April to May; fruits maturing from October to December.

分布

台灣 : at 700–2,600 m altitude throughout the island, especially common in the northern and central parts.
世界 : Distributed in mainland China (S & C) and southern Japan.
