Medium-sized evergreen trees.
Leaves ovate to broadly lanceolate, 6–8 (–10) cm long, 2.1–2.5 cm wide, acuminate at apex, obtuse and often oblique at base, entire or remotely serrulate, lateral veins 6–9 pairs, indistinct above; petioles 0.8–1.3 cm long.
Staminate flowers about 2 mm high, 3–3.5 mm wide; perianth 6-lobed, glabrous outside, hairy inside; stamens up to 12, filaments 3.5 mm long, glabrous, anthers longitudinally dehiscent. Pistillate inflorescence about 9 cm long, flowers 1.2 mm long, 1.5 mm wide; perianth 5–6-lobed; ovary with 2–3 styles.
Fruits with indehiscent cupules, ovoid to conic, 1.8–2.4 cm long, 1.8–2.3 cm wide, simple- or branched-spined, spines 5 mm long, 1.2 mm wide, tomentose; nut 1, ovoid-conic, 1.4 cm long, 1.2–1.3 cm across, glabrous.

台灣 : growing at 600–1,600 m altitude, usually in the central part of the island, especially abundant on Mt. Lutsang near Hsinchu, Lienhuachih near Puli, Mts. Shoucheng, Nung Kao and Kuantao in Nantou, and Chiapaotai near Kukuan.
世界 : Distributed in mainland China (SE, S & SW) and Hong Kong.
