型態特徵
Perennial marine herbs, monoecious or dioecious. Rhizomes creeping and branched or tuberous. Stems slender, flattened, usually branched. Leaves distichous, linear, sheathing at base, sheath with stipule-like margin. Flowers disposed on one side of a flattened spadix within leaf sheath. Perianth segments bract-like or absent. Staminate flowers of a single 1-celled dorsifixed sessile anther, opening lengthwise. Pistillate flowers with a 2 carpellate, 1-celled ovary; stigmas 2, filiform; ovule 1, orthotropous, pendulous. Fruit indehiscent or opening irregularly; seeds without endosperm.

Two genera with about 12 species on temperate coasts, from low tide to a depth of a few meters.

型態特徵
Submersed monoecious perennials. Leaves flat, ribbon-like. Staminate and pistillate flowers alternate in 2 rows forming a unilateral spike. Perianth absent. Carpels of pistillate flowers fused; styles slender. Fruit ovoid, rounded at base, irregularly dehiscent, beaked. Seeds solitary, longitudinally ribbed.
