型態特徵
Herbs, monoecious or dioecious, submersed in fresh, brackish or salt water. Rhizomes creeping. Leaves linear, with a conspicuous midrib, alternate or opposite, or crowded at nodes, sheathing at base. Flowers unisexual, solitary, axillary, or 2-4 in cymes. Perianth segments of a few scales or absent. Staminate flowers with 1 (2 or 3) stamens; anthers 2-celled, longitudinally dehiscent; filaments slender. Pistillate flowers sessile, carpels 1-several, free; style simple, stigma capitate; ovule solitary, pendulous. Fruiting carpels sessile or stipitate, indehiscent. Seeds pendulous, endosperm absent.

Six genera with ca. 25 species, cosmopolitan, mainly tropical; two genera in Taiwan.

Plants monoecious. Stems slender, much branched, green. Leaves submersed, linear, entire, stipulate. Flowers axillary, unisexual. Staminate flowers solitary, naked; stamen 1, anthers 2-celled, filaments slender. Pistillate flowers enveloped in a cup-like involucre; carpels 3 or 4, free, sessile, styles slender, elongate, stigmas obliquely peltate. Fruiting carpels 3 or 4, stipitate, dorsally keeled, keels usually winged, entire or with remotely obtuse teeth.
