型態特徵
Shrubs or trees, rarely herbs. Leaves opposite or rarely verticillate, simple or compound, estipulate. Inflorescence terminal or axillary, cymes, racemes, spikes or thyrses, sometimes capitate. Flowers bisexual or polygamous, zygomorphic or sometimes actinomorphic. Calyx gamosepalous, persistent, 4 or 5-lobed. Corolla gamopetalous, 4 or 5-lobed, lobes equal to subequal sometimes with a conspicuous lip. Stamens 4, didynamous and unequal or equal, alternate corolla lobes. Ovary superior, 2–8-locular, ovules 1 or 2 per locule, entire or 4-lobed, style terminal, stigma simple or bifid. Fruit a drupe or capsule, sometimes breaking up into nutlets. Seeds 1–4, usually without endosperm.

About 90 genera and 2,000 species, chiefly in tropical and subtropical; about 10 genera in Taiwan, three of the genera introduced and naturalized.

Herbs or subshrubs, slightly woody basally; stems and branches hairy or subglabrous, usually somewhat tetragonal. Leaves sessile, dentate, variously lobed or pinnatifid. Inflorescence spicate, usually terminal, often elongate after anthesis. Flowers nearly zygomorphic; calyx usually tubular, 5-toothed, thin; corolla tube cylindric, straight or curved, usually villous inside, mouth barbate, 5-lobed, lobes unequal, spreading; stamens 4, didynamous, inserted on upper half of corolla tube, anthers ovate, dehiscent longitudinally; ovary usually 4-locular, ovule 1 per locule, style as long as the stamens, stigma usually bifid. Fruit a capsule, dry, mostly enclosed by persistent calyx, separating into 4 1-seeded pyrenes.
