Perennial aquatic herbs. Rhizomes elongate, creeping. Leaves distichous, radical and cauline, erect, linear, spongy, semiterete. Flowers unisexual, bracteate, minute, numerous, densely crowded in a cylindrical spike, upper part of spike staminate. Bracts deciduous or sometimes absent. Stamens 1-3, surrounded by hairs; anthers basifixed, linear, yellow, obtuse, connective thickened, enlarged at apex, transparent; filament short. Ovary 1-celled, minute, on a long capillary stalk with many hairs or bracteoles at base; styles capillary; stigmas broadened or spatulate. Fruit minute, falling together with pedicle, indehiscent or laterally dehiscent; pericarp membranaceous. Seeds pendulous.
