Shrubs or trees, rarely herbs, with tough fibrous inner bark. Leaves alternate or opposite, simple, quite entire. Flowers usually hermaphroditic, axillary or terminal, in heads, umbels, spikes or racemes. Perianth regular, tublar or campanulate, 4–5-lobed, imbricate in bud, often with 1–2 scales at the base. Stamens 2 or as many as or twice as many as the lobes; anthers 2-celled; style short or long, terminal or excentric, the stigma capitate; ovules solitary or one in each cell, pendulous, anatropous. Fruit generally indehiscent. Seed pendulous or lateral; endosperm fleshly or 0; embryo straight.

Genera about 50 with about 500 species, chiefly developed in southern and tropical Africa and Australia; three in Taiwan.
