型態特徵
Shrubs or trees, usually with stellate pubescence. Leaves alternate, simple, estipulate. Flowers perfect, regular, solitary and axillary or in clusters, racemes or panicles terminating short lateral branches; calyx 4–5-lobed or cleft, free or adnate to ovary; petals 4–8, nearly separate or more usually united at base, imbricate or valvate, stamens twice as many as petals, inserted at their base; ovary superior or inferior, 3–5-celled below, ovules one-several in each cell; style slender, stigmas 1–5 . Fruit a dry or fleshy drupe. Seeds with endosperm.
屬
A family with ca. eight genera and over 100 species in eastern Asia, the Mediterranean region and North to South America. Two genera in Taiwan.

Infloresccences axillary or terminal racemes, simple or branched, with minute bracts; Flowers usually white; calyx cup-shaped, free or slightly adnate to ovary, margins truncate, 5-toothed or rarely 2–3-toothed, sometimes subentire; corolla usually 5-parted, tube short, lobes valvate or imbricate in tube, lanceolate to oblong; stamens 8–13, usually 10, attached to base of corolla; ovary 3-celled below, 1-celled above; style subulate or thick, stigma indistinctly 3-lobed or capitate; ovules few in each cell, sometimes solitary. Fruit globose to oblong, dehiscing by 3 valves or irregularly; seeds 1 or rarely 2, subglobose or ellipsoid, with thick endosperm.
