Perennial herbs, climbing or erect, or shrublets with rhizomes or tubers. Leaves distichous, opposite or verticillate, sometimes alternate, with three to many prominent nerves and close transverse parallel veinlets. Flowers axillary, solitary or in several-flowered inflorescences, bisexual, actinomorphic. Perianth petaloid, segments 4 and biseriate, or 5, sometimes basally united. Stamens 4 or 5, nearly hypogyous; filaments free or basally connate into a ring; anthers basifixed or dorsifixed, 2-celled, introrse, cells longitudinally dehiscent. Ovary superior to semi-inferior, 1-celled; stigmas 1-3, terminal, sessile; ovules 2-numerous, basal or apical and pendulous, anatropous or orthotropous. Fruit a 2-valved, sometimes berry-like, capsule; seeds with copious albuminous endosperm.

Four genera in Indomalesia, eastern Asia, northern Australia and southeastern North America. One genus in Taiwan.
