型態特徵
Trees and shrubs. Leaves opposite, pinnate, rarely 1-foliolate or ternate, stipulate; leaflets serrate. Flowers small, polygamo-dioecious, in terminal or axillary clusters. Calyx mostly 5-lobed, imbricate. Petals 5, free, imbricated in bud. Stamens 5, alternate with petals, inserted outside the cup-shaped disc. Ovary usually 3-celled, entire or lobed, the styles connate or distinct, terminal. Ovules 6 or numerous in each cell; placentation axile. Fruit a leathery or fleshy capsule, sometimes indehiscent. Seeds solitary or few in each cell, albuminous.

About five genera and 25 species, of wide distribution; two in Taiwan.

Small tree, glabrous and shining. Leaves opposite, odd-pinnate, stipulate; leaflets opposite, serrulate, chartaceous. Flowers small, yellowish white, in terminal panicles; calyx lobes 5, imbricate; petals 5, imbricate; stamens 5, inserted outside the cup-like disc, the filaments short, the anthers sub-rounded; ovary 2–3-lobed and celled; styles 2–3, combined or connivent, the stigmas subcapitate; ovules several in each cell, in two rows. Fruit of 1–3 follicles, the pericarp coriaceous, dehiscent along the ventral sutures; seeds l–3 in each follicle, arillate.
