Annual herbs; stems erect, hollow. Leaves alternate, simple, exstipulate. Flowers perfect, sessile, each subtended by a bract and 2 bracteoles, in dense many-flowered terminal spikes; calyx adnate to ovary, forming a hypanthium, 5-lobed; corolla sympetalous, regular, imbricate; stamens 5, alternate with corolla lobes; filaments distinct, epipetalous; anthers distinct; ovary inferior and adnate to hypanthium, 2-(3-)celled, placentation axile; style solitary, glabrous; stigma capitate. Fruit circumscissile capsule; seeds minute, numerous.

A single genus, previously assigned to Campanulaceae but best segregated in its own family.
