型態特徵
Herbs or shrubs, rarely trees or vines; some species hemiparasitic or parasitic. Leaves opposite or alternate, rarely whorled; exstipulate. Flowers in racemes, spikes, or thyrsoid panicles or solitary; perfect, usually irregular. Calyx lobes 5 or 4, rarely 1 or 2 by fusion. Corolla sympetalous, 4 or 5-lobed, often 2-lipped. Stamens epipetalous, usually 4 and didynamous, or 4 fertile and 1 sterile, rarely 2 or 5; anthers 1 or 2-celled, cells distinct or more or less confluent. Disc annular or cup-shaped. Ovary superior, 2-celled; style simple or sometimes forked; stigma capitate, dilated, or 2-lobed. Fruit a capsule, rarely baccate. Seeds small, hilum lateral or ventral.

Annual or perennial herbs, erect to prostrate. Leaves opposite, entire or serrate. Flowers solitary and axillary, in terminal or axillary racemes, or in subumbellate clusters; calyx 5-dentate, 5-lobed or 5-parted, 5-nerved, each nerve with rib or wing, ebracteolate; corolla blue, purple, violet, pink or white, tubular, bilabiate, upper lip outermost in bud, entire or 2-lobed; stamens 2 or 4, included or exserted, posterior pair fertile, anterior pair fertile, sterile or rudimentary, longer filaments often with appendages at or near base, anthers distinct, 2-celled, cells parallel or divaricate; style simple, stigma bilamellate. Capsule septicidal, 2-valved. Testa of seeds reticulate or scrobiculate.
