型態特徵
Aromatic or acrid-scented perennial herbs, often with a subterranean rhizome. Leaves alternate, simple, petiolate. Flowers in terminal or leaf-opposed spikes or racemes, small, bisexual, bracteolate, without perianth; stamens 3, 6 or 8, hypogynous or adnate to ovary and essentially epigynous, anthers basifixed, 2-celled, longitudinally dehiscent; ovary composed of 3 or 4 free or connate carpels, in the latter case the ovary 1-locular with parietal placentation; ovules orthotropous, 2-4 in each free carpel. Fruit a capsule or a semisucculent berry; seeds ovoid or globose, with small embryo and copious mealy endosperm.
