型態特徵
Aromatic or acrid-scented perennial herbs, often with a subterranean rhizome. Leaves alternate, simple, petiolate. Flowers in terminal or leaf-opposed spikes or racemes, small, bisexual, bracteolate, without perianth; stamens 3, 6 or 8, hypogynous or adnate to ovary and essentially epigynous, anthers basifixed, 2-celled, longitudinally dehiscent; ovary composed of 3 or 4 free or connate carpels, in the latter case the ovary 1-locular with parietal placentation; ovules orthotropous, 2-4 in each free carpel. Fruit a capsule or a semisucculent berry; seeds ovoid or globose, with small embryo and copious mealy endosperm.

Four genera, with five or six species distributed in eastern Asia and North America. Two genera, each with one species, in Taiwan.

Erect or ascending perennial herbs with creeping rhizomes. Leaves petiolate, alternate, ovate-cordate; petioles sheathing at base; stipules membranous, adnate to petiole at base. Spikes terminal, with an involucre of 4-6 whitish bracts at base, densely flowered. Flowers bisexual, small, naked; stamens 3, rarely 4, filaments basally adnate to base of ovary; ovary 3 or 4-lobed, 1-celled, placentas 3 or 4, parietal, styles 3 or 4, short. Capsules broadly obovoid, tipped by widely separated styles, dehiscent inside below styles; seeds rather numerous, ellipsoid, small.
