型態特徵
Trees, shrubs, rarely herbs, with abundant pellucid glands, filled with essential oils. Leaves opposite or alternate, simple or compound, estipulate. Inflorescence various. Flowers usually regular, hermaphroditic or polygamous; sepals 4–5, free or connate; petals 4–5, rarely none, imbricate or valvate; stamens as many or twice as many as the petals, sometimes fewer or more numerous; disc usually annular or cushion-like, between the ovary and stamens; ovary superior, usually deeply lobed, typically 4–5-loculed, the carpels more or less connate, or free, rarely 1-carpellary; ovules solitary or geminate. Fruit various, separating into as many cocci as carpels or baccate. Seeds usually solitary in each cell, the testa various; endosperm fleshy or 0; embryo straight or curved.

型態特徵
Shrubs or trees, unarmed. Leaves opposite, imparipinnate (9- to l-jugate). Inflorescences thyrsiform, terminal or terminal and upper axillary. Flowers small, functionally unisexual (plants dioecious); sepals 4 or 5; petals 4 or 5, distinct, narrowly imbricate; stamens (rudimentary or obsolete in female flowers) 4 or 5, distinct; disc intrastaminal, pulvinate to conical or columnar; gynoecium (rudimentary and comprised of 4 or 5 finger-like, divergent carpels in male flowers) 4- or 5-carpellate, the carpels distinct or basally connate, with a common apical style, the stigma peltate, the ovules 1 or 2 per carpel. Fruit of 1–5 distinct or basally connate follicles (the abortive carpels, if any, persistent). Seeds solitary or in pairs, remaining attached in dehisced fruit; testa of fertile seeds (a sterile seed is paired with the fertile seed in two species, neither Taiwanese) with thick inner layer of dense, black sclerenchyma and spongy outer layer bounded externally by a shiny, dark reddish brown to black pellicle.
