型態特徵
Trees, shrubs, lianas, or herbs. Leaves simple, mostly entire, commonly decussately opposite, often with connate interpetiolar stipules, or sometimes whorled, or rarely stipules intrapetiolar. Inflorescence basically cymose, terminal or lateral, rarely solitary flowers. Flowers mostly complete, rarely unisexual, nearly always epigynous, often heterostyle, zoophilous or rarely anemophilous, actinomorphic or rarely zygomorphic, often tetramerous or pentamerous. Calyx adnate to the ovary, aestivation open, lobes minute or obsolete, sometimes one or more enlarged and colored. Corolla sympetalous, salverform, rotate or funnelform. Stamens as many as and alternate corolla lobes, attached within corolla tube or at mouth; anthers dithecal, opening longitudinally. Ovary nearly always inferior, often bicarpellate; style single, terminal; stigma capitate or lobed. Fruit a capsule, berry, drupe, or schizocarp.

Trees or shrubs. Leaves opposite or 3-whorled; stipules entire or bifid. Inflorescence in terminal panicel-cymes, pubescent. Flowers small, rosy or white, sessile or pedicellated; bracteate; calyx 4–5-lobed, subequal, small, persistent; corolla tubular or funnelform, the throat glabrous or hairy, 4–5-lobed, imbricate in bud; stamens as many as the corolla-lobes, exserted or on the mouth of the corolla; styles filiform, stigma bifid, ovary 2-celled; ovules many in each cell. Fruits capsules, small, globose, 2-valved. Seeds many, minute.
