Annual or perennial herbs, or occasionally undershrubs; stems erect, ascending or decumbent. Leaves opposite, penninerved, subsessile or petiolate, entire; stipules interpetiolar, entire or lobed. Flowers in umbelliform or corymbiform cymes, terminal or in upper leaf axils, bisexual, heterostylous; bracts or bracteoles none to leaf-like; calyx urceolate, lobes 5, persistent; corolla tubular or tubular-funnelform, white, swollen insertion of stamens, lobes 5, valvate; stamens 5, adnate near apex of tube in some individuals, and adnate near base of tube other individuals, included; ovary 2-celled, ovule numerous per cell, style filiform, included or exserted, stigma 2-lobed or branched, sometimes coherent; fruit a transversely compressed capsule, obcordate to obdeltoid, dehiscing by a long transverse slit, 2-valved; seeds angular.
