型態特徵
Trees, shrubs, lianas, or herbs. Leaves simple, mostly entire, commonly decussately opposite, often with connate interpetiolar stipules, or sometimes whorled, or rarely stipules intrapetiolar. Inflorescence basically cymose, terminal or lateral, rarely solitary flowers. Flowers mostly complete, rarely unisexual, nearly always epigynous, often heterostyle, zoophilous or rarely anemophilous, actinomorphic or rarely zygomorphic, often tetramerous or pentamerous. Calyx adnate to the ovary, aestivation open, lobes minute or obsolete, sometimes one or more enlarged and colored. Corolla sympetalous, salverform, rotate or funnelform. Stamens as many as and alternate corolla lobes, attached within corolla tube or at mouth; anthers dithecal, opening longitudinally. Ovary nearly always inferior, often bicarpellate; style single, terminal; stigma capitate or lobed. Fruit a capsule, berry, drupe, or schizocarp.

型態特徵
Herbs or shrubs; stems repent, glabrous.. Leaves opposite, penninerved, petiolate; stipules interpetiolar, entire. Flowers in pairs, terminal or axillary, heterostylous; some individuals staminate, stamens exserted and style included, others pistillate, stamens included and style exserted; calyx broadly campanulate, 3–6-dentate; corolla funnelform, white, hairy in throat; lobes 3–6, valvate; stamens 4; ovaries of paired flowers connate, each ovary 4-celled, ovule 1 per cell, style filiform, included, stigma 4-lobed; fruit a double berry, 4-seeded.
