型態特徵
Trees, shrubs, lianas, or herbs. Leaves simple, mostly entire, commonly decussately opposite, often with connate interpetiolar stipules, or sometimes whorled, or rarely stipules intrapetiolar. Inflorescence basically cymose, terminal or lateral, rarely solitary flowers. Flowers mostly complete, rarely unisexual, nearly always epigynous, often heterostyle, zoophilous or rarely anemophilous, actinomorphic or rarely zygomorphic, often tetramerous or pentamerous. Calyx adnate to the ovary, aestivation open, lobes minute or obsolete, sometimes one or more enlarged and colored. Corolla sympetalous, salverform, rotate or funnelform. Stamens as many as and alternate corolla lobes, attached within corolla tube or at mouth; anthers dithecal, opening longitudinally. Ovary nearly always inferior, often bicarpellate; style single, terminal; stigma capitate or lobed. Fruit a capsule, berry, drupe, or schizocarp.

型態特徵
Evergreen shrubs or small trees; often fetid when bruised. Leaves opposite, apex usually cuspidate-acuminate; margins entire; secondary veins arching; stipules interpetiolar. Flowers bisexual, 2-many together in axillary heads or cymes; bracts axillary. Calyx lobes 4–6, persistent, pubescent. Corolla white, pink-purple or pale violet, funnelform or salverform; tube short, hairy inside; lobes 4–6, valvate in bud, apex mucronate and hooked. Stamens 4–6, adnate to corolla tube; anthers sessile or subsessile, dorsifixed, longitudinally dehiscent, introrse, included or exserted. Ovary 4–6-celled, ovule 1 per cell; styles filiform, muricate; stigmas 4–6-branched or indistinct. Fruit a drupe, globose or ellipsoid, blue, bluish purple or blackish purple, pubescent.
