型態特徵
Trees, shrubs, lianas, or herbs. Leaves simple, mostly entire, commonly decussately opposite, often with connate interpetiolar stipules, or sometimes whorled, or rarely stipules intrapetiolar. Inflorescence basically cymose, terminal or lateral, rarely solitary flowers. Flowers mostly complete, rarely unisexual, nearly always epigynous, often heterostyle, zoophilous or rarely anemophilous, actinomorphic or rarely zygomorphic, often tetramerous or pentamerous. Calyx adnate to the ovary, aestivation open, lobes minute or obsolete, sometimes one or more enlarged and colored. Corolla sympetalous, salverform, rotate or funnelform. Stamens as many as and alternate corolla lobes, attached within corolla tube or at mouth; anthers dithecal, opening longitudinally. Ovary nearly always inferior, often bicarpellate; style single, terminal; stigma capitate or lobed. Fruit a capsule, berry, drupe, or schizocarp.

型態特徵
Erect herbs or undershrubs. Stems terete or angled, pubescent. Leaves opposite; stipules connate with the petiole forming an entire or bristly sheath. Flowers subsessile, on the elongated branches forming cymes or spikes; calyx a toothed, teeth minute, persistent; corolla 4-lobed, lobes valvate in bud, with inflexed tip, throat villous; stamens 4, included within throat, anthers linear; style filiform, included or exserted, stigma 2-lobed; ovary 2-celled, each cell with one pendulous ovule. Fruit small, ellipsoid, indehiscent; seeds 2, with a thickened funicle.
