型態特徵
Trees, shrubs, lianas, or herbs. Leaves simple, mostly entire, commonly decussately opposite, often with connate interpetiolar stipules, or sometimes whorled, or rarely stipules intrapetiolar. Inflorescence basically cymose, terminal or lateral, rarely solitary flowers. Flowers mostly complete, rarely unisexual, nearly always epigynous, often heterostyle, zoophilous or rarely anemophilous, actinomorphic or rarely zygomorphic, often tetramerous or pentamerous. Calyx adnate to the ovary, aestivation open, lobes minute or obsolete, sometimes one or more enlarged and colored. Corolla sympetalous, salverform, rotate or funnelform. Stamens as many as and alternate corolla lobes, attached within corolla tube or at mouth; anthers dithecal, opening longitudinally. Ovary nearly always inferior, often bicarpellate; style single, terminal; stigma capitate or lobed. Fruit a capsule, berry, drupe, or schizocarp.

型態特徵
Shrubs or small trees. Leaves usually coriaceous; stipules interpetiolar. Flowers terminal, trichotomously branched, often in corymbiform cymes; calyx 4-toothed, persistent; corolla very slender, the lobes 4, twisted in bud; stamens 4, in mouth of corolla; filaments short; anthers slender, base bifid. Style filiform, exserted; stigma 2-lobed, lobes linear; ovary 2-celled, ovules solitary, peltately attached to septum in each cell. Fruit globose or didymous, with 2 plano-convex pyrenes; seeds 2, peltate.
