型態特徵
Trees, shrubs, lianas, or herbs. Leaves simple, mostly entire, commonly decussately opposite, often with connate interpetiolar stipules, or sometimes whorled, or rarely stipules intrapetiolar. Inflorescence basically cymose, terminal or lateral, rarely solitary flowers. Flowers mostly complete, rarely unisexual, nearly always epigynous, often heterostyle, zoophilous or rarely anemophilous, actinomorphic or rarely zygomorphic, often tetramerous or pentamerous. Calyx adnate to the ovary, aestivation open, lobes minute or obsolete, sometimes one or more enlarged and colored. Corolla sympetalous, salverform, rotate or funnelform. Stamens as many as and alternate corolla lobes, attached within corolla tube or at mouth; anthers dithecal, opening longitudinally. Ovary nearly always inferior, often bicarpellate; style single, terminal; stigma capitate or lobed. Fruit a capsule, berry, drupe, or schizocarp.

型態特徵
Annual or perennial herbs, undershrubs, shrubs, lianas, or trees; stems erect to diffuse, sometimes scandant. Leaves opposite or ternate, penninerved, sessile or petiolate, entire; stipules interpetiolar, adnate at base of petioles, forming a sheath with upper margin laciniate. Flowers in axillary fascicles or terminal cymes, bisexual or rarely unisexual; calyx campanulate, lobes 4(–5), persistent; corolla funnelform or campanulate, white, purple, or green; lobes 4(–5), valvate; stamens 4(–5), sessile or short-stalked, inserted in throat or tube, pollens 2- or 3-colporate; ovary 2(–4)-celled, ovule numerous per cell, style filiform, stigma 2-lobed or branched; fruit a capsule, loculicidal or sometimes septicidal, dehiscent in various ways; seeds angular, sometimes winged.
