型態特徵
Perennial evergreen herbs or saprophytes without chlorophyll. Leaves alternate, subopposite or in false whorls, simple, foliaceous or scale-like, mostly coriaceous and toothed. Flowers bisexual, actinomorphic or nearly so, bracteate; calyx of 5 free or shortly connate sepals; petals 4 or 5, free or united, hypogynous; stamens 8–10 distinct; anthers dorsifixed, 2-celled, opening by pores; ovary 5-lobed, locules 5 or sometimes incompletely chambered; placentas thick, bearing numerous small anatropous ovules. Fruit a loculicidal capsule, rarely a berry; seeds minute, testa loose, endosperm abundant.
屬
A family of about 14 genera and 57 species, chiefly in the boreal and temperate regions of the northern hemisphere; five genera in Taiwan.

型態特徵
Small, perennial, glabrous, stoloniferous herbs. Leaves radical, petiolate, serrulate, coriaceous. Flower terminal, solitary, pedunculate, white or pink; calyx 5-rarely 4-parted, persistent; petals 5, rarely 4, patent, orbicular; stamens 10, rarely 8; filaments subulate, base glabrous; anthers 2-1ocular, dehiscing by terminal pores; disc obscure; ovary globose; style straight, apex clavate, stigma 5-toothed; ovules on thickened placentas on inner angles of loculi. Capsule subglobose, 5-1ocular, 5-valved, valves septate; seeds small, testa loosely reticulate at both ends.
