型態特徵
Perennial evergreen herbs or saprophytes without chlorophyll. Leaves alternate, subopposite or in false whorls, simple, foliaceous or scale-like, mostly coriaceous and toothed. Flowers bisexual, actinomorphic or nearly so, bracteate; calyx of 5 free or shortly connate sepals; petals 4 or 5, free or united, hypogynous; stamens 8–10 distinct; anthers dorsifixed, 2-celled, opening by pores; ovary 5-lobed, locules 5 or sometimes incompletely chambered; placentas thick, bearing numerous small anatropous ovules. Fruit a loculicidal capsule, rarely a berry; seeds minute, testa loose, endosperm abundant.
屬
A family of about 14 genera and 57 species, chiefly in the boreal and temperate regions of the northern hemisphere; five genera in Taiwan.

Herbs or subshrubs. Leaves petiolate, subverticillate lanceolate, coriaceous, serrate. Flowers in terminal corymbs or solitary, white or purplish, pedicellate, bracteolate; calyx 5-branched or parted, lobes obtuse; petals 5, orbiculate, concave, patent or reflexed; stamens 10, filaments short, dilated, pilose on lower half, anthers 2-locular, opening by terminal pores; ovary globose; style short, obconical, stigma orbicular, 5-crenate. Capsules subglobose, 5-locular, many-seeded; seeds minute, testa loosely reticulate at both ends.
