型態特徵

Shrubs, trees or vines, rarely semi-herbaceous. Leaves simple, usually alternate, rarely opposite or subverticillate, estipulate, usually pubescent. Inflorescence axillary or terminal or at apex of lateral flowering branches, paniculate, racemose, subumbellate, or fasciculate. Flowers bisexual or unisexual, usually white or reddish, usually 4- or 5-merous; sepals usually connate at base, persistent, usually punctate; petals usually connate at base, usually punctate; stamens adnate to base or throat of corolla tube, as many as and opposite corolla lobes, anthers dorsifixed, dehiscent usually longitudinally; ovary superior, rarely semi-inferior, 1-locular; placenta basally attached, free-central; ovules many or few, imbedded; style single, stigma single, slightly capitate or sometimes lobed. Fruit a globose drupe or berry or rarely an elongated capsule; embryo covered by fleshy or horny endosperm.

About 42 genera in tropical and subtropical regions of both hemispheres; four genera in Taiwan.

Herbs, annual, biennial and perennial; stems erect or creeping. Leaves radical or cauline, simple, alternate, opposite or verticillate, rarely pinnately lobed, estipulate. Flowers in racemes, axillary or superposed verticils, bisexual, usually actinomorphic; calyx persistent, (4–)–5(–9)-lobed; corolla rotate, salverform or infundibuliform, sometimes subcampanulate, imbricate in bud, limb 4–9-lobed; stamens as many as corolla lobes and opposite them, inserted on tube; staminodes rare, alternate with stamens; ovary superior, glabrous or pubescent, 1-locular; ovules many, placentation free-central. Seeds small, many, endosperm copious.

Small trees, shrubs or semiherbs. Leaves alternate, rarely opposite or subverticillate, entire, crenate, serrate or dentate, with resinous marginal glands, punctate. Inflorescence paniculate, corymbose or subumbellate, axillary or terminal or at apex of flowering branches. Flowers bisexual, 5- or rarely 4-merous; sepals free or connate at base, convolute, recurved or spreading; stamens adnate to base of corolla tube; ovary ovoid or subglobose, stigma punctiform or slightly capitate; ovules several to many in one or more series. Fruit a drupe, usually punctate; seed 1, globose, with a hollow base; endosperm horny.

A large genus of about 400–500 species, primarily tropical east and southeast Asia, the Americas, Australia, and the Pacific islands. Fifteen species, one subspecies and one variety in Taiwan.
