Annual or perennial herbs or subshrubs, often succulent. Leaves spirally arranged or sometimes opposite, simple, entire, exstipulate or replaced by hairs, spines, bristles or scales in the axils and interpreted as stipules. Inflorescence racemose or cymose, or flowers solitary. Flowers bisexual, self-pollinating, rarely unisexual, actinomorphic; sepals 2 or 3 or rarely many, free or shortly connate at base and confluent with petals and stamens; petals (2-)5(-12), imbricate or rarely connate at base; stamens as many as and opposite petals or rarely many, free or sometimes adnate to base of petals; ovary superior or half-inferior, with 2-5 carpels, unilocular or rarely 3 locular, placentation basal or free-central. Styles and stigmas 2-8, connate below. Fruit a circumcissile or loculicidal capsule, seeds many.
