型態特徵
Freshwater perennial herbs, rooting in mud or floating. Rhizomes present or absent. Leaves rosulate or alternate, submersed or floating or emergent, with numerous parallel veins; petiole sheathing at base. inflorescences racemes or spikes exserted from sheath of uppermost leaf. Flowers bisexual. Perianth segments 6, blue or purplish blue, marcescent. Stamens 1-6, inserted at base of perianth; filaments free, glabrous or pubescent; anthers 2-celled. Ovary superior, sessile, 1-3-celled; placenta parietal or axile; ovules numerous, anatropous; style simple; stigmas entire or 3-lobed. Fruits loculicidally dehiscent, 3-valved. Seeds small, numerous, ribbed.

Inflorescences racemes, sessile or peduncle short, enveloped in broad leaf sheaths when young; peduncle with a bract at base, bent forward after anthesis. Stamens 6, one with a large filament with a lateral erect spur; anthers basifixed. Ovary 3-celled; ovules numerous; styles filiform. Fruit loculicidally dehiscent, 3-valved. Seeds ovoid, longitudinally ribbed.
