Freshwater perennial herbs, rooting in mud or floating. Rhizomes present or absent. Leaves rosulate or alternate, submersed or floating or emergent, with numerous parallel veins; petiole sheathing at base. inflorescences racemes or spikes exserted from sheath of uppermost leaf. Flowers bisexual. Perianth segments 6, blue or purplish blue, marcescent. Stamens 1-6, inserted at base of perianth; filaments free, glabrous or pubescent; anthers 2-celled. Ovary superior, sessile, 1-3-celled; placenta parietal or axile; ovules numerous, anatropous; style simple; stigmas entire or 3-lobed. Fruits loculicidally dehiscent, 3-valved. Seeds small, numerous, ribbed.

Freshwater herbs, floating or rooted in mud in otherwise dry habitats. Leaves rosulate or alternate, petiolate, broadly ovate or transversely elliptic or cordate. Flowers pedicellate, spirally arranged in a raceme. Perianth segments 6, light purple, inner upper one with a yellow blotch in center. Stamens 6, inserted on lower part of perianth, 3 long and 3 short; filaments hairy. Ovary sessile, 3-celled; ovules numerous; styles curved, filiform.
