型態特徵
Herbs, sometimes shrubs. Leaves alternate, simple, estipulate. Flowers bisexual, zygomorphic; sepals 5, free, imbricate; petals 3-5, the outer 2 free or connate with the lowest one, the upper 2 free; stamens 4, 5 or 8, monadelphous, connate to above the middle; anthers opening by terminal pores; ovary superior, usually 2-locular; styles simple; ovules usually solitary in each locule. Fruit a capsule.

About 10 genera, 700 species in tropical to temperate regions; two genera in Taiwan.

型態特徵
Erect, slender, annual herbs with leaves often reduced to scales. Flowers small, in dense terminal spikes; sepals nearly equal, the 2 interior ones somewhat larger; petals 3, united at the base with the staminal tube, the inferior keel¬-shaped, not crested; stamens 4 or 5, the filaments united below into a sheath, the anthers opening by pores; ovary 2-celled. Capsules thin, flat, usually ciliate, loculicidally dehiscent; seeds orbicular.
