型態特徵
Herbs or shrubs, acaulescent or with elongated branched stems. Leaves alternate, estipulate. Flowers bisexual, regular, 5-merous, often in one-sided racemes or in umbels; the bracts often sheathing, scarious. Calyx tubular or funnelform, 5-toothed or lobed, 5–15 ribbed, plaited, often scarious or colored. Corolla of 5 petals united into a tube or connate only at base, imbricate, usually small, persistent. Stamens 5, opposite the petals or corolla lobes, usually inserted on corolla, anthers 2-locular, longitudinally dehiscent. Ovary superior, 1-celled; style 5, free or connate; ovules solitary, pendulous. Fruit a utricle, sometimes circumscissile; seeds with or without endosperm, embryo large, erect.

About 25 genera and 440 species, of wide distribution, mainly in the Mediterranean region and Central Asia; two genera in Taiwan.

型態特徵
Perennial herbs, rarely annuals, sometimes shrubby. Leaves radical and tufted, thick, petiolate, entire or pinnatifid, base dilated. Flowers bisexual, regular, small, in tiny spikelets borne in one-sided spikes or umbels, spikes in panicles or corymbs; calyx tubular, scarious, often colored, spreading, 10-ribbed at base; petals 5, small, clawed, connate only at base, persistent; stamens 5, opposite, inserted at base of petals; styles 5, rarely 3, separate. Fruit membranaceous, enclosed in the persistent calyx, indehiscent.
About 300 species, widely distributed, chiefly in deserts, along seashores and in rocky mountain areas of the northern hemisphere; two species in Taiwan.
