型態特徵
Erect or scandent herbs, shrubs or rarely trees. Leaves alternate; stipules absent. Flowers small, bisexual or rarely unisexual, when plants dioecious, in terminal, leaf-opposed, or axillary spikes or racemes; bracts and bracteoles present, small; perianth-segments 4–5, free or connate below, imbricate in bud; stamens 4–30, inserted on a flesh disk, filaments free or connate at base, anthers 2-locular, introrse, dorsifixed, longitudinally dehiscent; ovary superior, composed of 4–15 free or somewhat connate carpels; styles short or wanting; stigmas as many as carpels; ovules solitary in each carpel, basal, campylotropous. Fruit fleshy or drupe-like or samara-like. Seeds reniform; embryo annular, surrounding the copious mealy endosperm.
屬
About 17 genera with about 70 species in tropical, subtropical and temperate regions. One genus with two species in Taiwan.

Erect or scandent herbs or shrubs, rarely trees; stems angular. Leaves alternate, petiolate, large, entire; stipules absent. Inflorescences racemose, terminal or leaf-opposed; flowers pedicellate; bracts present; bracteoles 1–3; perianth-segments 5, rarely 4, subequal, colored, persistent; stamens 5–30, inserted on margin of disc; ovary depressed-globose, with 5–15 free or laterally connate carpels. Fruit depressed-globose, entire or 5–10-grooved; seeds 5–10, compressed, shinning black; embryo annular, with mealy endosperm.
