型態特徵
Terrestrial ferns; caudex usually erect, stout; without scales on either caudex or stipes. Fronds circinnate; venation free. Sporangia borne in clusters on the sides of the pinna-axis (one genus has sporangia borne on the back of normal lamina, but this genus is not found in Taiwan); stalk short; dehiscence by a vertical slit over the apex.

型態特徵
Large terrestrial ferns; caudex covered with persistent leaf bases. Fronds borne in a dense spiral tuft; stele small; cortex large; stipes broadened at base bearing stipular-like wings, covered with mucilaginous hairs on very youg fronds; upper part of stipe usually with long, soft, tangled hairs on young fronds (especially abundant on fertile fronds); c.s. of stipe with a single "C"-shaped vascular bundle. Fronds pinnate, bipinnatifid or bipinnate; fertile and sterile fronds dimorphic or with fertile pinnae distinct from sterile (usually without any chlorophyll bearing blade); venation free, pattern of venation differs in the subgenera. Sporangia subglobose, with thickened cells on one side, dehiscing into 2 equal parts by a slit over the apex; spores green, short-lived globose, trilete.
